Smartphone: cervical stress due to bad postures
Table extracted from the study of Prof. Kenneth K. Kansraj.
In this interesting study produced by Prof . Kenneth K. Hansraj, MD ( Chief of Spine Surgery, New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine ) the load to which the part of the cervical spine is subjected while using a smartphone was measured and simulated .
The greater the inclination of the neck, the greater the weight.
It has been calculated that at a neck inclination of 60 ° forward ( typical of those who stop to look at the small screen for an extended period ) correspond to almost 30kg of load(!)
Furthermore, the average of the hours spent in positions potentially causing damage to the cervical portion, range from 700 a 1400 hours a year with peaks, for young people who touch the 5000 hours per year!
The only remedy is to keep the smartphone in such a position ( better if almost frontal ) without tilting the neck.
